House of The Rising Sun


Mr. Homeless Man sits royally at the Western Gas Station in Idaho Springs on August 8th. He sings the timeworn tune, House of the Rising Sun, next to the gallons of brilliant blue washer fluid. This song was made famous 50 long years ago by British band Eric Burden and The Animals.
So why dear reader, does he sing it today?
Famed folklorist Alan Lomax recorded this tune on rural backwoods porches in the 1930’s for The Library of Congress. This tune was recorded by such singers as Joan Baez in the 1960’s before The Animals broke out with it, to much fame
and fortune, in 1965.
I learned to play it, badly, as a 10-year-old kid…
So why does Mr. Homeless sing this song? It’s as timeless as homelessness and drifting I guess….
