DVD : The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONEDo we really need a movie about schlocky Vegas magicians just now? Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi star as two boyhood friends who escape the world of bullies and asthma to become amateur magicians. Thirty years later they headline in Las Vegas. James Gandolfini( “Doug Munny”-right?) hires them away to play his casino and ten years later, their act has become stale and robotic. Street magician Steve Grey (Jim Carrey) starts taking away their fans and the act, Wonderstone and Marvelton, breaks up. Wonderstone (Carell) ends up playing a nursing home and Marvelton (Buscemi) goes to Cambodia to hand out magic kits to the poor people. Wonderstone eventually gets his mojo back after a chance encounter with his boyhood idol Rance Holloway (Alan Arkin). You know the rest. Along the way are lots of sight-gags, physical humor, slapstick and snappy one-liners which help this formulaic movie immensely. Jim Carrey is thoroughly creepy but his sense of humor grows on you-a bit. Alan Arkin’s trademark voice and delivery is just irresistable.
Here’s Alan Arkin in his biggest role as Yossarian in Catch-22:
